Monopolar electrodes have a single conductive surface and need to be paired up with another monopolar electrode in order to allow current to flow from one to the other. BiPolar electrodes have two (2) surfaces built-in so they work by themselves.

Bipolar electrodes have two conductive surfaces built-in.
